And in ode to National Porridge Day on October 10th we’ve scoured London and selected our top 5 porridge cafes across the capital. All independent and from miso porridge, to classic blends there’s something here for every kind of person, and every kind of morning.
26 Grains, Neils Yard
Sometimes referred to as ‘The Queen of Porridge’ Alex Hely-Hutchinson opened 26 grains and started serving creative porridge to the people of London after falling in love with the inventive way the Danes used grains while living in Copenhagen. Her café sits in the upbeat, creative courtyard Neil’s Yard, just off Seven Dials and provides not only indulgent sweet porridges, made so creamy by soaking oats overnight, but also a range of creative, savoury options. Our advice? Be inventive, try the Egg and Kale or the Coconut, Kale and Chickpea.
Small, but perfectly formed. Just off Aldwych this tiny café is all white walls and cool vibes. With three porridges on the menu expect creamy textures with a fruity twist, choose from plum and ginger compote, baked banana or almond butter and lemon curd. As with its size, don’t underestimate this place, the flavours pack a punch and brunch here will never leave you disappointed.
Fernandez and Wells, Soho
Rustic and wholesome in style yet urban and contemporary in feel, Fernandez and Wells doesn’t have an extensive menu or flamboyant interior, here the vibe is more let’s do less but do it very well. Only one porridge occupies space on the menu and you’ll find a big vat of it sitting on the counter. Inside Flahaven’s Irish Oats, an organic flaked variety, are soaked in organic whole milk. Order a bowl and expect to see a waitress heap steaming spoonfuls into your bowl, before drizzling it with honey and topping with crushed Mercona almonds. Done well, sometimes simple really is best.
Maple and Fitz, Fitzrovia
Delicious tasting, healthy food that makes you feel amazing. That’s why Adria opened Maple and Fitz. After quitting her job in management consultancy and training as a chef and nutritionist Maple and Fitz is a labour of love, making healthy food available for busy Londoners. There are 4 porridges on the menu, grain virgins can stick with the naked porridge while those wanting something sweeter can choose from options featuring almond butter, sea salt and mejoula dates. Feeling adventurous? Try the miso porridge, it shouldn’t work, but it does.
Hally’s, Parsons Green
If Hally’s were a person they’d be constantly happy and upbeat, always smiling without a bad word to say about anyone. Californian-inspired this café adds an injection of US sunshine to Parson’s Green. The porridge is refreshingly light and creamy, featuring granny smith apples, agave syrup and toasted almonds. Go, soak up the good vibes and leave satisfied and smiling.
